AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME

Dear Al,

I am writing to inform you of two searches being launched today by the American Academy in Rome.

The first is for the 5th Andrew Heiskell Arts Director, who will continue to shape and implement the Academy’s broad/long-term vision for the arts and work to create an environment that fosters the arts and artists, and the collaborative community at the Academy. After a wonderfully productive term as the Arts Director, Martin Brody, RAAR’02, will step down from his post next summer to return to Wellesley College where he is Catherine Mills Davis Professor of Music. As the first composer Arts Director, Marty’s tenure has been memorable, and all look forward to his continuing leadership through 30 June 2010.

The second search is for a part-time Director of the Classical Summer School, the six-week summer program founded in 1923 for high school teachers and graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, including college teachers and those in related fields. It is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the growth and development of the ancient city of Rome and its immediate environs, from the earliest times to the age of Constantine, through a careful study of material remains and literary sources. Gregory Bucher, FAAR’96, will complete his very successful term after the session in 2010.

Because of your past interest and support of the Academy, we wanted to make you aware of these upcoming opportunities, and ask that you spread the word and/or consider nominating qualified candidates. We are eager to cast a wide net for both positions and welcome nominations, self-nominations, and applications from all qualified persons.

Thank you very much,
